The Jesus we Need to Know
Text: Mark 11:15-18
Occasion: General
Audience: Adults
Theological Tradition: Wesleyan
Topic: Holiness
Author: Seud O'Nimmy

You are the temple of the living God, made to have relationship with Him.

How to Get There

  • Jesus had been coming to Jerusalem for a while, but hadn't seen it this trip yet.
    • Then he crests the last hill and sees it (Luke 19:41-42), and he weeps, not just a little tear but a lot.
    • He is wishing Jerusalem knew... What does he wish we knew?
      • He wants us to know He loves us and cars.
      • He wnts us to know that God is with us
      • He wants us to know that we can have His inner peace (John 14:27).
  • Jesus went down into the temple and we see why he was weeping. A city sprawling with people come to worship God, but they were just going through the motions.
    • Everyone was worshipping, but missing Him.
    • We can go through the motions and yet completely miss Christ himself.
  • There were 2 million people in the city for the holiday, lots of new stalls in the temple area selling and trading. It must have been packed.
  • Jesus thrashed it all, and as soon as he had their attention he quoted scripture to back up his point.
  • 1 Corinthians 3:16 records that we are God's temples now. And the same passion and care that Jesus showed for the old temple he shows for us.
    • Whatever is not making us holy, needs to go.
    • And like the temple of Jesus' fay it shouldn't be about our desires and wants, but about what God does in and around us.
    • This new temple puts us directly in connection with God. It's not about doing, but about having a relationship with the God who dwells within us.
  • This is the point of our lives, to be Christ's holy temple. And he cares about his temple, that they be holy.

Things to Watch For

  • Where Jesus was in the temple was locally called "Annas Son's Market"
    • This is because Annas was the key power of the time. Either he or his sons had been high priest for many years.
    • They were charging to set up a shop here, charging to exchange Roman money to temple money neeed, charging for sheep grading, for everything.
    • This wasn't just people getting money from Passover crowds, but the leaders themselves exploiting the people.
  • John 2 records Jesus as making a whip and using it to drive people and animals out. The account in Mark is less violent, more attention getting.
