Finding God
Text: Amos 3:1-8
Occasion: General
Audience: Adults
Theological Tradition: General
Topic: Revelation
Author: D. Mackey

God is not discovered, He is found.

How to Get There

Other Texts:

God is found when He wants to be found. God chooses when He reveals himself to us. Our God doesn't need us, He doesn't need our help to run the universe (I hope this isn't a new concept to anyone).

There is no Hebrew word for "revelation" though there is a verb meaning to reveal or uncover. Amos 3:7 "No, indeed, Lord Yahweh does nothing without revealing his secret to his servants the prophets."

The word there translated secret can also be translated plan or purpose.

We cannot discover God as in a new being or species, but we can find Him. If we search for Him, wanting to come to Him, He will let us find Him.

Things to Watch For

Make sure to do some word work with the differences between discovery, revelation, finding, revealing, etc. as they relate to God.
